I’ve worked at the University of Virginia since 2015
I worked at Temple University from 2008-2015
I earned a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business (‘08)
Pre-academia, I worked over a decade for a variety of high-tech companies
I have a degree in computer science (‘88) and an MBA (‘93) from William & Mary
I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina
What do I do as an
Associate Professor of Commerce?
Teach multiple courses a year. Most recently: Ethical Use of AI, Managerial View of AI, and Race in Commerce
Provide service to my school and to my profession; such as, a Faculty lead in the Digital Technology and Democracy lab of the U. of Virginia Karsh Institute of Democracy; serve as an Associate Editor at Information Systems Research
Read, think, write, and do a lot of editing that eventually ends up in published research papers
As area coordinator, provide oversight of faculty affairs & area curricular content, and also provide various administrative and outreach functions for the IT & Innovation Area
Research
My research adopts a social-technical perspective to investigate how platforms, algorithms, and social dynamics shape the discovery, creation, and sharing of digital information. My research spans a broad range of topics, including online communities and other social media that support open innovation; application of social network analysis to teams, topics, and large voluntary collectives; content moderation; information source diversity; echo chambers and filter bubbles; race, gender, and technology; and the ethical use of AI and other emerging technology.
